“Berlin – Vibrant City”

The Contax G Summit in Berlin 2008, June 21 to June 24.

The Book: “Berlin -Vibrant City”

Will there be a book? I can’t see “why not”. The question is: What sort of a book? One to be sold from bookshops all over the world?  Or A Summit sum up illustrated with G picures, image text written by each individual participant, and printet on your own printers at home? Or something in between? The last option is maybe the more likely.

The idea, so far, is that every participant will be offered an opportunity to publish a number of images shot in Berlin. The number of images will depend on the number of participants at The Berlin Summit. Participants will be asked to make a short presentation of him/herself, and a short text to accompany each image presented in the book. Book lay-out will be handled by Harry Mueller.

Book title will be “Berlin – Vibrant City”.

There will be more on this later, so stay tuned :-) .

Well I will be designing a layout for the “Berlin-Vibrant City” shortly. Back from my vacation and then off to Hawaii for 10 days. Looking forward in shooting on my G2, color print film totally. Color print film scans very well especially in the shadow areas.

I think all the discussion about each participant to submit some of their images and text is an excellent idea.
This book can be updated and arranged as we are in Berlin. The book can be updated daily as we progress. I will be bringing my Apple Power Book and incorporate the images into the book. Once the book is complete we can create a pdf file for everyone, upon which each person can print out a copy on their own or there a number of sources that will produce a book for you. I know Apple has such an option.
We will need to find someplace to scan film and I am sure they will have some photo outlet that will process and scan the film onto a cd for us. I know I can do that here in the states.

Once the book is in a digital format it can be produced in any number of ways. We do want to keep the expenses down and going the conventional offset printing method would be to expensive for any of us. Once digital one can print the book on a Epson printer with Hahnenmuller rag content paper, which will last 100 years.

I am so looking forward in meeting all of you. It will be a blast.

    Best Regards,

    Harry Mueller

Many thanks for this initiative on the book agenda. I am sure, that everybody are going to listen in very carefully when you window your expertice on printing. I will, for sure :-) .

I am just back from 5 incredible shooting days in Berlin, and wiil bring updates within a couple of days. I can tell you that Berlin is just such a great city for shooting, that you will not belive it :-) . Peoplescapes, cityscapes, old and new. And a wonderful easy going lifestyle. It is very much a city on the move. In every way. Vibrant.

    Best regards

    Knut,
Thank you for the reply. I believe you when you say that Berlin will be very exciting to photograph.
I was there about 20 years ago visiting some of my distant relatives and it was then also very photographic.
I did check out that hotel and it seems reasonable by all standards. So all of you who want to converge lets make sure we make that reservation before the deadline.

    Best regards to all,

    Harry

Thanks. If you haven’t been there for more 20 years you are for sure in for a surprise. Berlin is still much of a construction site and some famous international architects have been (and are) at work there. You are in for a major, major experience.

Give me a couple days to sort my notes and check some things, and I’ll be back with a more finished program (for those who might want that).

I went to see the people at Hotel am Scheunenviertel. More on that later … but there will be alternatives to choose from. Berlin is much more easy to get around in, and to navigate, then I had ever dreamed of.

This was my first time to Berlin, and once I got over the intital confusion, that comes with a first visit, everything went pretty smooth. The transportation system in Berlin is second to none (I really mean that). And besides, basic berlin isn’t really that big :-) . I saw many of the most important places a couple of time mainly by walking :-) .

    Well, I’ll be back …

    Best wishes

I have to tell you that I for several weeks now have tried to reach Harry Mueller, but with no luck I am afraid. Today is April 12, 2008. I will try a couple of times more.

Will there still be a book? I can’t see why not. It is pretty easy to make one, even if we cannot have Harry Mueller standards, we can make one ourselves. So prepare for your best 4 to 5 berliner shots for a book. Maybe even more shots.

Please let me hear from in this matter. if it is of no interest to most, then ….

    Cheers

One possibility is to use Blurb http://www.blurb.com I’ve seen a few examples of what they have produced and have been quite impressed.

Yes, that seems to be a good option. I don’t know the program. Do you? Can you work it?

    Cheers

I’ve not used the programme, but one member from another group of which I am a part – the Rollei Users Group – has recently begun to put together a book of its members’ photos. It does not seem too difficult to master,

I have used it now. I spent most of the day yesterday with it.

To make a standard book it is pretty easy if you use the same page lay-out throughout the book. The worst part is in fact having the pictures prepared so they are ready to go. If I am lucky I will have an example booklet with me to Berlin, but then I need to be really lucky :-) .

    All the best

Daniel Ridings, who was putting together the Rollei book, has had, by all accounts, a pretty horrendous time with the text for it. The photos were relatively easy – the text was not! I’ll keep you all up to date with possible alternatives.
